Welcome to March everyone,

During February Tania our Youth Director has been busy handing out  Book Bags to all the schools new entrants as well as distributing Hi-Vis Vests to all the primary schools in Cromwell.  Thanks to our Trust for supporting this.

We had Rylee Watkins our RYLA candidate come and speak to us about her amazing experience at RYLA. which is held in January.  Each year our Rotary club sponsors a candidate to spend a week with other potential Rotary youth leaders.  The course takes you out of your comfort zone, public speaking, leadership workshops, team building just to name a few.  If you know of any young person who has leadership potential, please get in touch.

Otago Anniversary Day falls on our meeting night this month, so instead we are having a Vocational visit to Carrick Winery to hear Tony and Ali Cleland talk about their journey into the wine industry.  Everyone should have received a sign-up list email.  This is open to all Rotarians and friends of Rotary.

Next month some of our Rotarians will be helping again at the Warbirds over Wanaka.   This is led Rotarian Fin White.

Don’t forget to put the 10th June , our changeover night in your diaries.  Venue to be confirmed.

Jan

Richard Broadhead
Our go to man for almost anything, Richard quietly goes about sorting our IT dilemmas & ensuring the club and the events we hold run smoothly!
We can thank him for the great prepaid meals system, on line registering for events & background financial help.
He also installed the solar watering system at Rotary Point and is part of the team that ensures we keep the planting growing.

Thanks Richard 😊

Thank You from Isla Lawrence

 Dear Cromwell Rotary Club Supporters,

I want to personally thank you for your support of my Ice Hockey and helping me get to Türkiye to play for New Zealand. Being part of this team has been an incredibly meaningful experience for me, and your support plays a huge role in making that possible.

Because of you, I’ve had the opportunity to grow not only as a hockey player, but also as a person. Representing New Zealand on the ice is something I take great pride in, and knowing I had support from my community motivates me every day.

I am truly grateful for everything you have done for me, and I look forward to continuing to work hard and represent New Zealand.

Thank you again for your support.

Sincerely,

Isla Lawrence

Shelter Box - Rotary Impact Report 2025
Guest Speakers - Katie Seymour and Mike May
Guest speakers at a recent Monday meeting were Katie Seymore and Mike May   representing Friends of Cromwell Cemetery.

They gave a comprehensive presentation and discussed their group's future plans for the cemetery.
The CODC manages the cemetery and will expand the area over the next few years.
The concerns of the Friends of Cromwell Cemetery include overbearing from the adjacent industrial estate, limited planting of shelter trees, restricted water availability,  pest control, and lack of shelter for visitors to the cemetery.
They aim to address these issues; however, they will need support from the community.

The pest control is the responsibility of the Council and the view is that rabbit problems will be overcome as the industrial area expands, leaving less opportunity for intrusion from the boundaries. The council will also adopt a pest control program in the future.
The council is also reticulating the boundaries to allow for the establishment of trees; however stipulates that Cromwell has a dry land cemetery.

Friends of Cromwell Cemetery have plans drawn up for a Rotunda shelter and seek community help for them to construct this facility. They are hoping for “In Kind” support to achieve this goal, however will be dependent on donations to make up for any shortfall.

There were a number of questions from members that were answered comprehensively.

Peter Svensson thanked Katie and Mike for their presentation, and they received a round of applause.

Ryle Watkins - Guest Speaker RYLA Highlights
At our February 23rd meeting, we were inspired by Rylee Watkins as she shared her "life-changing" experience at the January RYLA camp. Encouraged to attend RYLA by Doreen at Southern Peak Law, Rylee highlighted the value of practical, real-world experiences. She emphasised the focus on continuous improvement, citing her group's refreshment of the Lilliput Library that past candidates had worked on, with the goal of "leaving things better than you found them." Rylee also offered valuable insights on leadership, the importance of learning from mistakes, and how adapting leadership styles is key to working effectively with different generations.
As the recipient of the Hannah Cup for resilience, Rylee reflected on the growth she gained by the uncomfortable moments.
