President's Message

Hi all
All of the sudden the end of my year as president is here! The year has flown by and I have enjoyed getting to know many of you better, seeing members take on new roles & commitments and  challenging myself. I have been humbled by your support, guidance, mentorship and willingness to say yes over this last year - thank you.
The last few months have been challenging for us all. Thank you for joining in when & where you can. It was awesome to see so many join the Zoom meetings. It is great to be able to now get out and do things again with opportunities to help with a variety of activities. DON'T feel you need to join in everything but find what interests you to be involved in - there is plenty of choice!
What a great success the Guess Whose Coming to Dinner was at all four homes. A chance to get to know others better in a smaller group than we usually meet in. This will definitely happen again so make sure you put your name down next time.
Changeover on June 29th is our first chance to celebrate being able to all get together. Make sure you sign up for a great night. I will forward my report for the year before hand as I know you will want to spend the evening enjoying each others company... not listening to me!!
Looking forward to seeing you all on Monday 29th.

Warm wishes

Cromwell Rotary President
Rotary & Ronald McDonald House
On June 8, in place of their usual Monday meeting, local Rotarians held a Guess-Who’s-Coming-to-dinner event in support of Ronald McDonald House (RMH).   The initiative was in support of the RMH annual winter-time fund-raising event called HOST-A-ROAST (   Four Rotarians offered to host a dinner party for other Rotary colleagues, and so on the night 20 Rotarians shared themselves around 4 homes and four dinner parties proceeded.  Much conversation and frivolity followed as well as an amazing repertoire of fine food and wine.  Rotarians do fun stuff well – and on this occasion raised $500 for Ronald McDonald House as well.  Pictured from left are current President Neroli McRae showing her expertise in taking selfies at one of the dinners, and her companions Jo & Craig Lunn and Doreen Evans, and host Alan Lloyd.  Standing is Barbara Lloyd co-host.
And if you’re reading this and think that joining Rotary might interest you then please call Neroli on 027 434 6014.  We are always keen to have good people join us ;)

Sam Neill
The Rotary Club of Rowville-Lysterfield in Melbourne, has conducted a series of twice yearly Business Breakfasts for the past ten years or so, attracting high profile speakers and supporting many worthy causes, both Rotary and non-Rotary. Naturally, with the current pandemic, face to face events are not possible, so they have turned to the digital medium to stage their event.
They have secured the services of the Hollywood actor, Sam Neill who has agreed to donate his services for a 45 minute Q & A session at 7.30am AEST on Friday 19th June at our first ever 'Zoom SHOW-Business Breakfast.'  They are charging $25  (AUST) to 'attend' by zoom webinar and will cover a range of topics about his life and interests. Proceeds will be going to support charities of Sam's choice, specifically devoted to supporting out of work entertainers and actors in Aus and NZ, as he has expressed a great concern for this section of our respective communities especially in regards to their current social and mental welfare.
The Rotary Club of Rowville-Lysterfield usually give a bottle of wine or similar to their speakers but as this has its issues (with the distance and Sam producing his own wine) they have asked us if they could present Sam with an Honorary membership to our club. This is of no ongoing cost to our club and may have some benefits in the future. Sign up to support them and watch - details below
The books are on their way to Rarotonga

The Rotary Clubs of Alexandra, Cromwell  and Wanaka, have been working with the Rotary Club of Rarotonga to provide books to improve literacy in the Cook Islands.  New books have been purchased for the Apii Nikoa school library and pictured here 2 pallets of quality 2nd hand books left Cromwell this week to be used in lilliput libraries in the villages.  Funds were also received from a Rotary District 9980 grant giving a total project value of$11,000.

Can't wait to see photos of the books being used in Rarotonga!

Trees to Firewood
A great way to warm up on a cold morning for a hardy group of Rotarians who braved the cold start to the day to cut firewood for those in need in our community.
