June 2022

Adrienne and I are just back from a few days in Canterbury firstly for a work function and then a few days R&R at Akaroa. It was such a relief to get out and about and take time to refresh. We were so relaxed we took time to book flights to go to be with our daughter in Spain later in the year. It seems we have got to the point of needing to establish what the “new normal” might look like and realise we cannot lock ourselves away forever!! Don’t worry caution, masks, social distancing and common sense are all part of this “new normal”.
Thanks to Bernie for standing in for me at Monday's meeting and to get 25 along was very encouraging. We meet face to face again on June 13 so keep an eye out for details of that meeting.
DG Nick has updated us on progress with fund raising for Polio and the update from the pumpkin project. In summary club, individual and pumpkin sponsors raised just over $42,000 which with a district contribution of $7,500USD and then with all of the Gates and Rotary Foundation matches our money grows to about $175,000 NZD. This is truly amazing and a great reward for all of the work and effort DG Nick put into this particular project. Given that Covid did restrict Nick from visiting clubs and led to clubs not meeting regularly makes this effort even greater in my view. Well done to all concerned.
Applications for funds from the Lot 47 project close in a week or so and I am advised we will have more applications than funds available and while that creates some challenges it also shows the need in our community. The applications will be processed during June and after the combined Lot 47 committee reviews them the Lions and Rotary directors will be asked to make the final recommendations. This has been a wonderful project for our club and our community with a real benefit being it has brought the Lions and Rotary closer together which is great….we are not competitors!!
It is quite amazing to think this is the second to last bulletin I am writing. The year has flown by and because we have not met regularly there are a lot of my plans that simply did not get a chance to get started. However while I am sad we have not been able to meet very often this year we can all be proud of what the club has achieved through the year. I will summarise that next time.
Take care…..Stuart
Stories
PHF for Lesley Ann Wilkie
It was with great pleasure that Pam Broadhead and Neroli McRae awarded Lesley Ann Wilkie a PHF at her home recently.
Together with Lindsay, Lesley Ann has been involved in sorting books for the Rotary booksales and helping customers with their book choices for many many years.
She has specialised in sorting the childrens selection but her careful eye for quality books and good systems has always been of benefit to all the organising team.
This award not only recognises these efforts but also the many other ways in which Lesley Ann works diligently behind the scenes for groups and members of the Cromwell and Clyde communities.
In becoming a Paul Harris Fellow, Lesley Ann joins a remarkable company of persons throughout the world, all recognized for their devotion to the ideal of good will, peace and understanding.
We congratulate you Lesley Ann and thank you for your committment to Rotary and your community.

New Lilliput Library
A New Lilliput library was put up in Cromwell last week for children to have ready access to books at anytime.
The little library is located outside the Kidsfirst early childhood centre, facing onto the greenway there. Anyone can take a book from, or put a book into the library.

Nicola Brown, a teacher at Kidsfirst and a Wanaka Rotarian, is the instigator of this project with the children at Kidsfirst, who decorated the libray and helped to stock it with the first selection of books.
Thank you to Richard Broadhead from our Rotary club who made sure that the library was attached firmly to the fence and at the right height for little people to be able to see the books easily.

Presentation 23 May
Alastair and Krisztina Hansen and their children are having a well deserved break from their missionary work in Hungary.  While back in Cromwell, Alastair and Krisztina spoke at the most recent Rotary meeting about their work in Hungary and the current implications of the adjacent Ukraine war.  If you can offer any support as Alastair and Krisztina fund raise and prepare to return to their mission, please do so.

Welcoming new members
It is very encouragong for the club that we continue to welcome new members in these days of restricted activities and outings.
On the 23rd of May, incoming President Bernie McKone welcomed Mark Mexted, Jo Morshuis and Ross Lunn to the club.  We wish them well in their Rotary time ahead.

All in the family
The Lunn brothers Craig and Grant have added brother Ross to the Rotary family as well.
What a good looking team.

Parting thought 23 May
A very timely and thoughtful item to share with all.  Thanks Anne

Hope our parting is only brief.
Too many partings lately have caused me grief
From convention restrictions, cancelled meetings and Rotary Zoom,
I have no wish for another parting gloom.
This year has made me wise,
For I value a real person before my eyes
One without a mask wearing disguise.
So, until our next meet,
Enjoy the pleasure of a Rotary meet and greet.
