Well 2019 has arrived
I hope for everyone it’s been a great start to the year.
Rotary has started with a very successful book sale, it looks like our best summer sale to date, I would like to thank Pam Broadhead, Neroli McRae (and my  wife Jo , who spent 2 full days at the Bowling Club, we might make her a Rotarian yet) for organising and running the sale, also their committee of helpers and club members who helped over the last few days, it was great to see so many helpers clean up on Monday night.
Our second success for the start of year was the 25th Annual Rotary 4WD Rally held on Russell and Jeannette Emmerson’s farm, it was a great day despite a little rain. With some stunning scenery, plenty of vehicles, a great BBQ and drink to finish, thank you to Russell and Jeannette, what a beautiful farm you guys have, we appreciate allowing us to be able to see high country farming. Thank you, Bill Wilson and Ross Cooper and your team of helpers for organising this great event.
Our Rotary Youth Exchange student arrives on the 20th January 2019, his name is Eugeno Campanella from Chile. Please everyone make him welcome when he comes along to our meetings, don’t forget he’s being hosted by our club. This means get involved with him and if you’re going somewhere you think he would enjoy take him.  An activity you maybe doing could be a first for him to experience. He will be staying with Nick and Beth Wood for first 4 months.
Don’t forget our conference is in Oamaru in April, so make a long weekend of it and come join the team heading there already, contact Alan Lloyd if you want accommodation, he may have some left.
We have 500 High Vis Vests to give out to Pre Schools and Primary Schools around Cromwell over next few weeks, thank you Hillary Seagrave for finding the great prices, A BIG thank you to Otago Motor Club Trust for their major contribution to fund the vests.
Keep an eye out for calendar events over the next few weeks, have a safe and enjoyable 2019.

Stories
Summer book sale

Hundreds of donated books have now been re-housed to eager new readers following the Rotary summer book-sale over the weekend.  Held over 2 days at the spacious Cromwell Bowling Club stadium in Alpha street, the sale netted a little over $5000 with an average price of $2 per book.  Pam Broadhead, one of the organising group reports that about 100 banana boxes full of books were sold.  "We are very grateful to the locals and visitors alike who came to browse and buy - and of course to the many who gave us the books to sell in the first place.  We're now going to have a little rest and then get stuck in to the mammoth task of sorting the hundreds of new donations that have been received recently for the June book-sale.  That's the super-size sale.  The Bowling Club stadium will be groaning to cope with all the books (and CDs and LPs and magazines, and puzzles) we've got ready for the winter book-sale the first weekend in June."

Anyone with books, CDs, LPs, magazines to donate can drop them in at the Rotary book exchange container in the forecourt of Freeway Orchard.  It's open 363 days a year during business hours.

Rotary also acknowledges the generous support of sponsors and supporters : Continental Party Hire, R & R Hiabs, Nichol's Garden Centre, and the Cromwell Bowling Club.

Annual 4WD trip

25th Annual 4WD Heartland Safari
Forty one vehicles enjoyed this years Heartland Safari which traversed from the starting point at Forest Range station and concluding at the Old Stockman’s hut in the Lindis Pass. Russell and Jeanette Emerson lead the tour and provided some local knowledge along the way. The participants gained over 1100m in elevation starting at 466m above sea level.
This was the first time in the events history that it had to be postponed due to the wet weather the previous Sunday. As we set off from Forest Range station the weather looked a little unsettled as we traversed the Grand View Ridge. Lunch was enjoyed at West peak, however by the time the last ten drivers had negotiated a small mud hole the cloud had descended limiting the view.
After lunch we continued on and with the weather clearing we had fantastic views from Breast peak and into the Lindis Creek which we crossed before completing the day back at the Forest Range Woolshed where Nick and his crew had a cool beverage and sausage on offer.
Another fantastic Safari thanks to the efforts of Bill, Ross and their team. These events wouldn’t be possible without the generous support from the landowners and Russell and Jeanette did a fantastic job leading us through the their and neighbouring properties.

40 Year Celebrations

In September this year it will be 40 years since our club was chartered. This will be a great opportunity to celebrate all that our club has achieved & also look forward to where we want to head.

We are looking for people to help organise in 3 areas;

  • A function to celebrate

  • A project to commemorate

  • A recorded history

It would be great if people would put their hand up. Let Craig or Neroli know if you are willing to help out

Rotary is a worldwide network of inspired individuals who translate their passions into relevant social causes to change lives in communities.
