President's Message

Well its 2 months into my role as president already and we are on track with the changes our committee wanted to make. Why change?  Well we felt it was time for a change , we need to keep our club interesting and fun and try and attract new members of all ages , as time is important to all age groups ,  so our weekly meeting are going to fortnightly , the second Monday and 4th Monday of the month starting on the 8th Oct. We have trialled this on a couple of occasions to date and it seems to be working well, we will also look at doing community projects on some of the other Monday nights as and when projects arise. We also would like to get out to businesses around Central Otago, with.  the rapid growth around the area , we should get to understand what people are up to , thus getting our presence out in the community more.

We also wanted to help reduce costs at meeting, so we have removed fines, raffles, table collections and once the joker is drawn that will be end of the jackpot also.  We are also working on paying meals at the bar, giving members the opportunity to pay by eftpos when purchasing their drinks.
We also are wanting to use Clubrunner more, we have paid for it, so let’s use it, so the calendar will have upcoming events, projects and meeting dates. We will email out events where we require helpers, so you can log in, put in attending etc and send, making it very easy for our projects team, rather than paper going around at meetings, and then forgetting what you are doing later - this all is new to us as well as members, so be patient till we iron out mistakes etc

What else has been happening in the last 2 months:
We hosted the School Debate night, which was a great success, and we have some talented students in Central
We had Josh Stachle from Germany speak to us about why he chose NZ to have a student exchange here
We had Peter Mead speak to us about his community involvement over many years, He also received a Paul Harris Fellow Award from Cromwell Rotary  Club that night
We had Melanie Mills speak to us about Youth Employment Project
We helped out with the Light Up Winter Festival
We had a Movie afternoon to see Mamma Mia with Partners
We have inducted 2 new members and hopefully we have more in the wings
We helped with tree planting at the 45th Parallel sign on Cromwell /Wanaka highway

Enjoy the spring weather we are having
President Craig

Lucy Laws proudly holds the John Webb Memorial debating trophy which she and her co-debaters Joshua Hancock and Jemima McCombe-Rae won in the final of the Central Lakes Schools Junior Debating Championship for 2018 at our meeting on August 20. The topic for the debate was "That we need more heroes".

Ainslie Webb was on hand to award her trophy. She commented in her presentation speech that her husband and our good mate John W would debate both formally and informally. It was her comment about the informal debating that got the biggest cheer from the gathered throng.
