Rotary Radar July 2026

Hi everyone.  
Welcome to the July edition of the Rotary Radar.  June was a big month.  The Presidential changeover occurred at Panners on the 10th of June.  It was a great night of fellowship and celebration.  Many congratulations to Past President Jan and her team of directors on a great year. Congratulations also to those who were recognised on the night;

  • Sue Svensson – Sapphire Paul Harris Fellow
  • Trish Bulling – Paul Harris Fellow
  • Craig Lunn – The Mary & Lindsay McIntyre Award

Changeover is an opportunity for the incoming President to set out some goals and objectives for the year ahead.  Mine are simply as follows

  • Our COMMUNITY CONNECTION – 5 areas of interest to me which include
  • Our Meeting Venue – Is one of the rooms at the new Cromwell Memorial Events Centre Te Puna Mahara an option for us.  Watch this space.
  • PR – this club has a long and proud tradition of doing amazing things in our community. Our current and future projects are awesome. I think we have loads of opportunities to share our story louder and prouder than ever before.  
  • Guests – bring them!  We shouldn’t just bring guests who might be potential members, we should bring friends and family members who might enjoy a night out and hear from our amazing guest speakers.  
  • Recognition – We need to recognise and thank more people from within our community who do amazing things.
  • Events – we have a great new events centre that we must make the most of, not only for our possible meeting venue, but also larger major events.  Two are lined up, working on a third James Dicey August 24 – open to members and guests, a Christmas cooking event with Judith Cullen and Gabi Lind December 4 – open to members, guests and the general public and The future – Peter Beck
  • FUN – Have fun and enjoy the Rotary experience - We must never lose sight of the fact Rotary needs to be an enjoyable experience for all members so that they see value in their membership.
  • INVOLVEMENT – I want everyone to be involved
  • You will all be encouraged to be a part of a committee or project working group this year.  We are a volunteer club and we need people to volunteer to help.

Let’s all look forward to another great year in the history of the Rotary Club of Cromwell.  

In terms of other news, at the end of June I was lucky enough to MC the District Changeover in Christchurch. At that event, our club was recognised with the trophy for the best club project. This was for our House and Garden Tour project.  Congratulations to Paula Jackson and the rest of her team for their efforts. Great to be recognised by the district.

Even though Adrienne is way overseas, she has lined up some great speakers for us over the next couple of months.  Please support our speakers by joining us at the Town and Country Club and remember to feel free to bring friends or family!

June Social Evening at Five Stags
As June had five Mondays in it - we had an impromptu social gathering at the Five Stags Bar and Resturant on Monday 30th. About 25 of us braved the cold for a very enjoyable occasion - a great suggestion Jonathan!!
Guest Speaker - Tamah Alley
CODC Mayor Tamah Alley was the guest speaker at our meeting on June 22nd.
The theme of her address was the State of the Region and she covered a number of the issues been signalled as a requirement by Central Government.
Tamah provided a number of interesting statistics about our region:
  • Growth Rates are among the highest in the country at 11.7% (Queenstown is 17.9%)
  • 55% of our population is urban
  • We have the second highest average income in Otago.
Following Tamah's talk President Jonathan asked a number of questions submitted by club members.
Topics raised included the Cromwell Mall, now generally recognised as no longer fit for purpose; possibility of a new sports complex (not in the short term but possibly in the future); protection of assets in the event of a merger with other councils; water rates!; the need for a Central Otago hospital based in the Cromwell area which is seen as a high priority given population growth.
Tamah spoke very well and gave us a very interesting insight into the work of council and challenges facing our region.
Her presentation was both informative and inspiring, highlighting a range of projects and initiatives that will benefit our growing community.
 
Thank you, Tamah, for joining us and for your commitment to helping shape a vibrant future for our community.
 
Changeover at Panners 
It was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and thank Jan Hopcroft for her outstanding year of leadership as President. Her dedication, enthusiasm, and commitment have made a lasting impact on our club and community.
 
We also warmly welcome our new President, Jonathan Usher, as he takes the reins for the year ahead. We are all looking forward to supporting him and the club as we continue to make a difference in our community.
 
A special highlight of the evening was recognising three outstanding members for their dedication and service to Rotary.
 
🏅 Sue Svensson was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow.
🏅 Craig Lunn received the prestigious McIntyre Award.
🏅 Trish Bulling was also honoured as a Paul Harris Fellow.
 
These awards reflect the significant contributions each of these members has made to our club and community. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and grateful for the commitment, leadership, and service they continue to provide.
 
Congratulations to all three recipients on this well-deserved recognition.
 
Here's to a year filled with friendship, service, new opportunities, and plenty of fun along the way. Bring on an exciting year ahead!
 
Rotary in Action at the Cromwell Volunteer Expo 

Cromwell Rotary was pleased to be involved in the recent Volunteer Expo in Cromwell, where we supported Volunteer South and Cromwell Community House with the running of the event, as well as having our own stand on the day.

Our stand attracted encouraging interest, and it was great to make several new contacts with people keen to learn more about Rotary and community involvement. We look forward to following up those connections and hopefully welcoming new faces to future projects and events.

A sincere thank you goes to the Rotarians who gave their time to help at the expo and represent our club so well. Whether assisting with the running of the event or spending time at the Rotary stand, your support helped make the day a success.
Vocational Visit - Aotea Electric Cromwell


 
On Monday 15th June a group of us braved a very cold and damp evening to visit the  Electrical premises and Warehouse  on McNulty Road.  We are very used to seeing their vans buzzing around Cromwell but few of us had any idea of the extent of their business. It was very interesting to learn that three of their major contracts in recent years were Highlands, the new Event Centre and Scapegrace - the new distillery. Each of these was a major undertaking for the company and the extent of expertise and work involved was mind-blowing!! Airconditioning and heat is another important aspect of their work from new house builds to fixing your heat pump. It was stressed that no job was too small for them to take on with a dedicated team that dealt with the many requests for help with servicing and fixing any appliances. 
We also a look around their warehouse - where the more practical minded amongst sought advice and answers to a number of questions. So a big thank you to the staff who gave up their time to host us. A most enjoyable evening
