November 2023

Bit of a gap in meetings due to holidays - but looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the 13th. But of course, we will have had our House & Garden Tour and Fishing competition by then – so hope they both go well and everyone has loads of fun in the process.
Rotary in Action last month had a great turnout at Rotary Point on the 7th of October – about 70 plants in the ground – mostly replacements – but also some new plantings – using a new technique to hopefully increase survivability. Also, testing out a new system using wool as a mulch. This should retain moisture, suppress weeds and keep the plants warmer.
Many of you will be pleased to hear that the Club have purchased 30 tables mainly for the book sales. These are all stored at the Core Shed or in our containers.  And will also be available for other events as necessary. Pam did quite a bit of research on this to ensure we got the best deal and the necessarily robust tables. So many thanks for that. Craig has also refurbished some tables from the Memorial hall – so we won’t need to run around town ever again begging and borrowing a whole lot of rickety old tables – this will save an enormous amount of time, hassle and frustration – no need to keep track of where they all came from and ensuring they take the weight of the books.
This month I want to draw your attention to World Polio Day which was on 24th October. We did not undertake a specific polio collection – but the Directors will recommend to the Trust that we make a sizeable donation from existing fundraising activities at our meeting next Wednesday.
It was just 35 years ago that globally, polio paralysed about 350,000 children annually. Rotary started the Eradicate Polio initiative in 1978 – it was subsequently taken up by the UN, who created the Global Polio Eradication Initiative). As of today we are still on target to eradicate wild polio cases by 2026. This will make it only the second infectious disease ever to be completely eradicated, after smallpox in 1980.
There are a few road bumps – not the least of which is that the current wild cases are in Pakistan (2) and Afghanistan (6)– not the easiest of countries to work in. Although, surprisingly, this year the Taliban have come out in active support of the programme and have actually opened up areas previously restricted to vaccinators. This includes supporting women vaccinators.
Since the start of the programme in 1988 the investment is estimated at about US $18 billion. About 5 billion of this has come from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and about $2.1 billion from Rotary. The current situation is that for every dollar Rotary puts into the pot the Gates Foundation puts in 2. So, a massive programme – that is 99.9% there. It would be ridiculous for us to stop now – the job needs to be finished and polio confined to history. Thus, we will continue to play our very small part in this until it is done.
See you out there. Cheers, Richard.

Paula has again found a great group of fabulous homes and gardens in and around Cromwell to be part of our fourth Rotary House and Garden tour this year on 11th of November 2023.
But we need more helpers for the afternoon shift! Please call Pam B on 0223539643 to offer your help.

The primary recipient of money from ticket sales this year will be The Central Otago Resilience Trust (CORT). CORT has been established by a group of concerned local business and professional people to support families struggling as result of medical misfortunes.
They are aware that most people display a remarkable degree of resilience in these circumstances, and a variety of welfare assistance does much to help. But the fact is, that the unforeseen costs resulting from those medical misfortunes can leave people wondering how they will fund bare necessities, let alone the unexpected medical costs.
The Central Otago Resilience Trust has been established to verify the need quickly and efficiently and provide assistance to those suffering financial hardship as a result of a medical condition, illness or disease in the Central Otago region.

A big thank you goes out to the wonderful group of sponsors who cover all the project's organisational costs such as advertising, printing and ticket distribution.
Feldwick Insurance, Shoes Unlimited, Guthrie Bowron, Pinot Junction, Barret Homes, Sequoia Finewares, Goldenview Lifestyle Village, Trends Kitchens, Sign It Central, Webbs Fruit and Southern Peak Law.

Maori Point Wine Tasting
Maori Point Wine Tasting Vocational Visit.
This very popular vocational visit was a fun event for members, partners and friends. Club member Pam Hardley and Matt Evans, Owner and Winemaker, hosted the evening and shared the story of Maori Point Wines and vineyard which was planted in 2002.
The crowd enjoyed tasting the Maori Point wines and the lovely nibbles in both the winery and tasting room which are right beside the vineyard and surrounded by beautiful mountains.

Rotary Point Planting Bee
A great turnout of members family and friends met at Rotary Point early in October to replace the trees and shrubs that hadn't survived
A selection of hardy replacements and a well proven planting technique will provide the best chance for these new plants to get growing.
The teams have started on the summer maintenance programme  of watering and weeding now to so the area is looking great.
All the family joining in - even the dog!!

With pleanty of water and a cuddly wool blanket the little plants have been given a great start.

Many hands make light work - a great team effort - thank you everyone.

Shaping Tomorrow Together – The Central Otago Wellbeing Project.
Kia ora

We’re reaching out to you as community members who play an important role in our district.
We have launched a bold new project called Shaping Tomorrow Together – The Central Otago Wellbeing Project.
This is about identifying what is important to you about living, working or holidaying in Central Otago. What will be important to you and contribute to your wellbeing in the future, and how can we work together to make sure we take care of the things that matter most to you.
This project will help develop a 50-year vision that will be used to shape Central Otago's future.
Click here to register to get involved and be part of the conversation. We want to ensure there are as many people as possible signed up so we hear the real voices of Central Otago.
