President's Message

I’m not sure I like getting older,  I remember when as a young working guy, the weeks seemed long and weekends too short, now the year has nearly gone, where did it go, the years seem to be getting faster and faster.

So what’s been happening in the last month.

We had Sue Curran speak to us about her time as a journalist in some pretty rough places around the world and her time working with the UN, I’m sure we could spend a lot of time listening to some more interesting stories.

We had Gilbert Stace come along and talk about the voluntary fire brigade.

We had the District 9980 fun day ending up at the Highlands Race Track, for some of us the pace car around the track was too slow, it was a great day and the weather turned out very nice.

The following day Andrew Burton and his team put on another successful Take A Kid fishing competition, the 25thanniversary of this event, a record 116 entries was fantastic, I believe the fish weren’t that easy to catch on the day, thanks again Andrew and your team for organising, much appreciated.

I’d personally would like to thank Neroli McRae for running our 12th November Monday meeting and Director's Meeting whilst I was away on business, I heard she did a great job, so I think we are in good hands next year when Neroli becomes President.

At our last directors meeting...

We approved funding of  $2000 to Cromwell College, this has been a yearly commitment.

$660 to a young boy who’s having some difficulty in life, so money is going towards swimming lessons and joining Scouts.

We approved Carwen Williams attending Science Forum and put $500 towards her cost to attend.

Life Education Trust, $500 to assist in operating costs.

Community Welfare Trust, helping with Christmas Function $200.

Approved top up of House and Garden St Johns fund raiser of approximately $1500 to reach total of $15000.

Hilary Seagrave has been organising pricing for 500 High Vis Vests to go out to our local primary schools and pre-schools, I had a contact with the Otago Motor Club Trust and applied for a grant of $2000, of the $4800 required, they responded and gave us the total costs, so thank you Otago Motor Club Trust, much appreciated, we hope to get them out to schools at start of 2019 school term.

Our last meeting for the year will be 10th Dec, a BBQ at Doreen Evans home.

The first Town and Country Club meeting will be on Monday 28th January - However lookout for a book sale working Bee on Monday 14th and a friends and family get together on Monday 21st.

Thank you to all those members who had made my job easy as president to date I appreciate all your hard work.

Have a great Xmas wherever it takes you.

25th Annual Fishing Classic
25th ANNUAL ROTARY FISHING CLASSIC on LAKE DUNSTAN – SUNDAY 11th NOVEMBER 2018

We are pleased to advise that the 25th annual Rotary fishing classic went off well on Lake Dunstan
Sunday 11th November with fine, calm weather but cloudy conditions in the lake due to the heavy
storm earlier in the week.  In 25 years we have never had to cancel this event.
This year’s entries were 116, up 14 on last year, which was very satisfactory including 50 children,
 58 adults and 8 Juniors.
All the winners in the Open Class were in the Child Class so that was a pleasant surprise.
The heaviest fish weighed in was at 2.14kg and caught by Maycee Ellis so Maycee wins bragging
rights and a trophy sponsored by Central Otago Hunting & Fishing for the next 12 months.
There were only 2 Perch caught and these by Garett McKnight(.464kg) and Anika Croy (.176kg).
In the Juniors section Casey Brown caught the heaviest Rainbow Trout at 1.784kg and the heaviest
Brown Trout was caught by Ben Stacey at .986kg.
In the Adult class Conal Wattam caught both the heaviest Rainbow Trout (1.86kg) and the heaviest
Brown Trout at 1.42kg’s with Roger Forde the best condition Rainbow Trout at .626kg and Donald
Paterson the best condition Brown Trout at .528kg.
In the family section the 1st prize went to the Affleck family & 2nd to the Gill family.
The prize for the furthest travelled at the prizegiving was Oliver Burton all the way from Timaru.
Well done to all prize winners.
Rotary wants to thank all the prize sponsors who make this event possible: Central Otago Hunting & Fishing, Clutha Fisheries Trust, Cromwell Fish & Game, Steve’s Marine, Paper Plus, Gary Anderson Electrical, Otago Farm Machinery, Alex Campbell Menswear, Five Stags Restaurant, The Gate, B.P.to Go, Super Liquor, Cromwell Collision Repair, Cromwell Tyres, Tyreland, Cooke Howlison, Farmlands, Freshchoice Supermarket, G.E.S Supplies, The Fridge, Cromwell Bulletin, New World, Vinpro, Cromwell & District News, Radio Central 91.9FM, The News in Alexandra, Central Otago Sports Depot Alexandra, The Central App.

Finally, I want to thank all the many Rotarians who helped to put on this annual event and we
hope to see you all again in 2019. Thank you. Andrew Burton. Organiser.
